How Tree Planting Works

TreePlanting Scheme

We engage with landowners to agree a planting plan that suits their vision for the site, taking into account the site's soil, aspect, size etc. Then during the bareroot treeplanting season (Nov to March in Ireland), we organise treeplanting days when we come along as a group with saplings, treeguards and stakes to plant the trees. Funding for the trees, guards and support-stakes is ringfenced and comes from our sale of tree vouchers and occasional donations, plus we engage with groups such as Trees On the Land who provide free trees to community groups to plant each season.

On larger sites, we plant on a phased basis, sometimes over a few years. We are available to help with tree maintenance in the first 5 years after the trees are planted. GreenFriends access to any site after we plant is completely at the discretion of the landowner, but we like to know how the saplings are growing so that we can offer help with any problems that arise, and we can do treecare days if requested.

Landowners

The basis of our collaboration is a landowner’s genuine wish to set aside some portion of their land for native trees and habitat on a non-commercial, long-term basis. We do require that any necessary fencing or hedging at the site,  to keep the young trees safe, should be in place before we begin planting; this has become an essential factor for us, given the current high increase and reach of Ireland’s deer population in particular.  Giving young saplings we have planted their best chance to thrive is important to us, so we do ask to have seasonal photos or videos in the first few years so that we can gauge and learn from survival rates, health of the trees on each site etc.  Though entirely at their own discretion, we always welcome an invitation from the landowner to visit the site following planting, because a treecare day can often support the young trees development, and we also learn a lot from seeing in person how the trees are adapting to each specific site. What we’ve done so far

We have planted 6000+ native trees around Ireland creating a number of modest woodlands on lands that the owners wish to set aside for native trees and habitat.

Our TreeBook [Add link] tells the stories of our shared journey so far, including the methodology and rationale behind our planting plans.

West Hollywood, Co. Wicklow: 160 trees in 2023
Edenderry: 251 trees planted in 2020
Tallow, Co Waterford: 85 trees planted in 2020
Cloyne, Co. Cloyne: 170 trees planted sinc 2018
Broughillstown, Co. Carlow: 800 trees planted since 2017
Aught, Co Donegal: 895 trees planted since 2017
Lugglass, Co. Wicklow: 1000 trees planted since 2016

Tree Vouchers

Along with occasional fundraising events, we fund our treeplanting projects mainly through the sale of tree vouchers. We set the cost of one tree voucher at €5, which is a little more than our average cost of planting and protecting one bareroot sapling.

We also love to collect treeseeds from Ireland’s ancient native woodlands when they ripen each year. When a treeseed is ready (sometimes after months stratifying in the fridge!), we sow it in a pot or in a tree nursery in our gardens or balconies where the seeds will grow on for a spring or two, until ready to be moved to a permanent home on a GreenFriends tree-planting day. In addition to giving us full confidence in the provenance of our saplings, this whole process is incredibly uplifting and rewarding.
